Sunday Morning Frost!

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Woke up this morning to temperatures in the mid 30's and plenty of frost. Some locations, near the lakes, are dealing with fog this morning.  I believe it is the big difference in air and water temperature causing that.

The good news is we will warm quickly into the mid and upper 60's today.

STORM CHASERS ROARS BACK FOR SECOND SEASON ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL

- All new season premieres Sunday, October 19, 2008, at 10 PM (ET/PT) --

Discovery Channel returns to the heart of “Tornado Alley” for a firsthand look at one of nature’s most destructive forces in an all new season of STORM CHASERS, premiering Sunday, October 19, 2008, at 10 PM (ET/PT).

Veteran research meteorologist Dr. Joshua Wurman and filmmaker Sean Casey go head to head, toe to toe and fender to fender with newbie chaser Reed Timmer racing to capture rare footage and valuable scientific data.

Last season, Casey’s tank-like TIV or Tornado Intercept Vehicle, raised eyebrows roaring down the nation’s highways and byways looking for the shot of all time– filming from inside a tornado.  Now, his new and improved creation, the TIV-2, raises the stakes, providing the astonishing footage and the terrifying excitement of storm chasing.

“Mixing science, competition, fear and a good old fashioned American road trip STORM CHASERS packs a torrent of excitement, knowledge and entertainment,” said John Ford, president and general manager, Discovery Channel.

Casey and Wurman make an unlikely team. Filming from the turret of his self-designed and self-built TIV-2, Casey risks his life to get the most elusive tornado footage ever shot.  As the leader of the team, Wurman guides the TIV from his mobile command post, The Doppler on Wheels (The DOW).  Wurman makes split-second life-or-death decisions based on information from Doppler Radar; as the safety of the entire team rests on his shoulders.

Hot on their trail, and often one step ahead, is storm chasing wunderkind Timmer, a PhD candidate in Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma and, ironically, a former student of Wurman.  Timmer and his rag tag team of buddies Joel (driver) and Chris (hailstone collector), track storms in their unique way.  Freed from complicated on-board computer systems and intricate vehicle design, the threesome set a course for surprise and adventure.

Perfect Autumn Weekend

It is going to be an awesome weekend here in Cookeville, TN.  As you can see in the webcam shot above, we have sunny skies this morning just before 8 o'clock.  Temperatures are in the lower 40's.  We expect highs today to reach the lower 60's under sunny skies.

Finally, having a birthday party today for our little girl who just turned one year old last Friday.  It'll be fun!

Clouds Hang On

Friday, October 17, 2008

We wake up this morning with .23" in the rain gauge.  Checking all the information this morning reveals a picture of a day where clouds will fight to hang on through the day with some light drizzle early.  Another low pressure area will slide through late bringing with it clouds and no precipitation.  We won't temperatures much above 65° (if that) for today and down to the middle 40's tonight.  Saturday will be chilly with clouds decreasing, eventually with a few peeks of sunshine with highs fighting to make their way into the lower 60's.  Sunday will be sunny with highs right around 70°.

Late Night Roundup

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Very light rain has fallen since late afternoon here in Cookeville, Tennessee.  We've mostly had mist-type rain this evening with waves of heavier mist.  Checking the handy CoCoRaHS rain gauge, I've got nearly .20"...we'll see what it reads in the morning at the 7 am observation.

Quite a change in weather coming for us for Friday through next week. Temperatures, which earlier this week were near 80° every day, will back off into the mid 60's for Friday and even lower on Saturday (around 61°). We do see a bit of a warm up for Sunday (69°) and Monday (73°) but will go backwards as we continue through the early part of workweek.

Our average high and low this time of year is 71° and 44° respectively.

Tonight, we focus on some interesting links.  There is something for everyone from falling leaves that are beautiful in color in my home state to a crazy situation concerning what you breathe out and finally, learning about faith.  Enjoy the links below.

DON'T BREATHE OUT!
Incredible story about Obama's plan to declare Carbon Dioxide a pollutant.   Guess they will decide how much you are allowed to exhale.

EXERCISE YOUR FAITH
Excellent story about faith from Barbie Bassett, chief meteorologist at WLBT-TV, the NBC station in Jackson, MS.  I really enjoy her posts.

Here Comes The Rain (and Cooler Temps)

Say good-bye to those days in the 80's.  We'll see rainfall develop in eastern Middle Tennessee later today and continue this evening as highs will struggle to break 70° this afternoon.

Latest On Hurricane OMAR:
Omar is a major Category 3 hurricane this morning and is crossing the Leeward Islands between St. Martin and the Virgin Islands.  Glad my family got out of St. Maarten when they did!  More here on Omar

Fall Colors Arriving Quickly
Back here in Tennessee, if you love fall weather, you'll love this weekend.  Highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's...the fall colors are beginning to look nice.  Peak color is about a week to ten days away.

Sign Thief:
Finally, some idiot stole my McCain sign from my yard.  Guess the thief didn't like the whippin' Big Mac put on Obama in the debate last evening.  Funny thing is, I have a Lamar Alexander for Senate sign right next to it and that sign was untouched.  No big deal, I'll go get another one from the headquarters here.

Another Warm One (Omar Now A Hurricane)

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

One more warm day today as high temperatures will reach into the mid 80's!  That is over 13° higher than our normal high for this date of 72°. After the rains come through on Thursday, look for a big cool down going into the weekend!

*Latest, Local Forecast *

Omar is now a hurricane and headed for the U.S.  Virgin Islands as it churns through the eastern Caribbean sea. As I said, I have relatives in St. Maarten and they want out.  Hopefully, they'll get out on a 3 pm plane IF the airport isn't closed.

Farmer's Almanac Winter Weather Outlook

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Here it is, the Winter 2008-2009 Winter Weather Outlook from Farmer's Almanac.  Check out your area of the country to see what they think you may have.  You can go to Almanac.com or click here.  The Old Farmer's Almanac...still a treasure after all these years!

In The Path of Omar

Received a 'panicked' call this evening from relatives in St. Maarten (pronounced Martin).  They've been watching Tropical Storm Omar and decided to evacuate.  Here is how it went:

Me:  Hello....

Relative:  Hey, have you seen the weather lately? (duh!)
There is a possible Cat. 2 hurricane heading  our way.

Me:  Ok...So what would you like me to do? (figuring they wanted updates)

Relative:  We need a flight out immediately.  Not ready to die on this island!

Me:  Where would you like to go?

Relative:  I don't care, anywhere, Miami or New York

Me:  Ok, I'll check...got a flight going out tomorrow at 3-something.

Relative:  Great, I'll take it.

Me:  Do you want to know how much?

Relative:  Heck no, I just want out of here...

And so it went, got them booked out of St. Maarten in advance of soon-to-be Hurricane Omar.  Hopefully, there are able to get out.   How they are going to get from Miami back home is a yet-to-be determined and ever evolving situation!

Funny thing is, they can see the ocean from their balcony.  It isn't so funny when you're staring at a possible Cat 2 storm and you're in, basically, a third-world country.

Just another day in the Weather Business!

Two More Warm Days (and then BIG CHANGES!)

We'll see highs in the 80's today and tomorrow.  Then, get ready for a whole lot of change!  A cool down after the rains is in the forecast.  Normals for this date are 72 and 44 while the records are 88 (1928) and 27 (1988).
